Compare the routes
| Method | Setup | Software cost | Separate PC or Windows license? | Mac type | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| RetroHours browser player | None: add the ZIP and play | — | Neither | Browser check applies | Supported games only |
| CrossOver | Install the app, create a bottle and run the game’s EXE | Paid; trial | Neither | Intel or Apple silicon | Game compatibility needs testing |
| Porting Kit | Install the app and set up a custom game entry | Free | Neither | Check current macOS requirements | A custom configuration may be needed |
| Windows VM | Install the VM app, Windows and then the game | Parallels paid/trial; Fusion free | Windows license; no PC needed | Check vendor requirements for your chip | Windows setup, storage and performance |
| Boot Camp | Partition the disk, install Windows and drivers, and reboot to play | Included on eligible Macs | Windows license; no separate PC | Eligible Intel Macs only | Rebooting and Windows maintenance |
| Moonlight streaming | Set up Sunshine on the PC and pair Moonlight | Free | A PC already running the game | Supported macOS client | Host availability and network delay |
1. Try the browser route
RetroHours runs the game from your own download in the browser, without launching the Windows EXE. The browser setup guide covers the full sequence.
2. Try a compatibility layer
CrossOver and Porting Kit run Windows software without a full Windows installation. With CrossOver:
- Install the trial and create a new bottle for the game.
- Extract the game ZIP to a stable folder.
- Select the bottle, use Run Command and choose the game’s EXE.
- Test gameplay and saving before purchasing.
For Porting Kit, follow its official tutorial and add the EXE as a custom port. Older guides may recommend Whisky, but its project is no longer actively maintained.
3. Use a Windows virtual machine
Parallels Desktop and VMware Fusion run Windows alongside macOS. Windows licensing is separate from either app.
- Check the vendor’s requirements for your Mac, then install the virtualization app.
- Install Windows. Apple silicon Macs need Windows 11 on Arm.
- Copy the game ZIP into Windows, extract it and run the EXE.
- Test input, sound, saving and loading after closing the game.
4. Consider Boot Camp only on an eligible Intel Mac
Apple’s Boot Camp guide covers Windows 10 on supported Intel Macs; it is not available on Apple silicon. Back up your Mac, use Boot Camp Assistant to install Windows and its drivers, then extract and run the game there. Standard Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025.
5. Stream from your Windows PC
Moonlight shows your PC’s game on your Mac and sends your input back. The PC runs the game and keeps its saves. Follow the official setup guide:
- Confirm the game runs on the PC.
- Set up Sunshine on the PC and install Moonlight on your Mac.
- Put both on the same network, select the PC in Moonlight and complete PIN pairing.
- Stream the desktop and launch the game, or add it as an app in Sunshine.
Test quick dashes and jumps where you plan to play; network delay can affect controls even when the picture looks clear.
Finish with a save-and-reload check
Whichever method you pick, play a short session: move, jump, dash, open a menu, save, close and load again. Use the Mac controls reference for input help. Back up saves before switching methods.
