How do I play Mega Man X: Viral Nightmare on RetroHours?
To try Mega Man X: Viral Nightmare on RetroHours, get a game ZIP from the creator’s Game Jolt page, open Add game, choose the ZIP, then select Try game on its game page. Every personal tier requires admin approval of your exact game files. RetroHours runs supported GameMaker games in your browser, and Mega Man X: Viral Nightmare is the first one it supports. Support is experimental: importing a ZIP does not guarantee that your version will run.
What is Mega Man X: Viral Nightmare?
Mega Man X: Viral Nightmare, also searched for as “Megaman X Viral Nightmare,” is a fan-made reimagining of Mega Man X6 by Cat Yard Games. The creator’s project overview describes redesigned stages, armor pieces you can combine, and changes to the Nightmare Soul and parts systems.
This guide covers getting started on RetroHours. For release details and game updates, follow the creator’s Game Jolt page.
How to start playing on the site
Get the game from its creator
Visit Mega Man X: Viral Nightmare on Game Jolt and check the downloads offered by Cat Yard Games. Keep the original game ZIP if one is available. Download availability and packaging can change; a missing download cannot be replaced by this guide.
Check your browser
Open Your browser on Home. It checks the storage, graphics and other browser capabilities the player needs. Passing this check means the browser has the required capabilities; it does not mean every game version works.
Add the ZIP
Open Add game, choose Choose ZIP, and select your game ZIP. You can also drop it onto the upload area. Wait for the checks and copying to finish. The free shelf holds one local game; replacing an existing game asks for confirmation and keeps its saves.
Use the game package, not a shortcut, installer or a ZIP containing only an executable. Keep the package’s supporting files together.
Choose Try game
After import, RetroHours opens the game page. Read Can I play it? and choose Try game when offered. Follow the player’s start prompt. If you return later, open the game from your shelf.
A successful import confirms that the ZIP was added. Browser play remains experimental, and a version that needs unsupported features may stop with an explanation.
Focus the screen and play
Click or tap the game screen so it receives your input. Use the game’s menus to start a session and review its own control settings. The browser player does not require you to launch the Windows executable.
Set up controls and sound
Keyboard: click the screen before pressing game keys. Open Controls to inspect or change the player’s bindings. Use the game’s own settings for its gameplay actions; do not assume the defaults are identical between releases. Press Tab to return to the player buttons.
Controller: connect your controller and press a button so the browser can detect it. Check Controls to see the detected device. Use direct controller input for games that support it, or configure the controller to send Keys for keyboard input.
Touch: phones and tablets show an on-screen pad. Controls lets you adjust its size and buttons. Game compatibility and speed still depend on your device and game version.
If the player offers Enable sound, select it to allow browser audio. Use Fullscreen for a larger view and Esc to leave fullscreen on a keyboard.
Keep your saves and make a backup
Use the game’s normal save feature when available. RetroHours backs up saved files automatically. Open Saves, select the game if asked, and download a backup you can keep outside the browser.
Guest and free-account saves live in this browser on this device. Clearing RetroHours site data can delete them. Stop the session with the player’s controls before leaving; if it ended unexpectedly, inspect Saves for recovery options. An ordinary save backup is separate from a memory save state.
What if the game won’t run?
- The ZIP won’t import: confirm that you selected the complete game ZIP and read the import error. Add game shows package size limits. An installer or executable by itself is not a complete game package.
- The player stops: read the message on the game screen, then check Your browser on Home. Unsupported features may need a future RetroHours update; repeating the import is not a compatibility fix.
- Keys or buttons do nothing: click the screen, check Controls, and review the game’s input settings.
- Sound is silent: select Enable sound if shown and check the player and device volume.
For more help, open Help. If you share a troubleshooting report, include your browser and the game release you used. Keep your save backups before removing anything.
Common questions
Can I play Mega Man X: Viral Nightmare online?
You can try browser play on RetroHours by adding your own game ZIP and choosing Try game. Whether it runs depends on the game version and the features it uses. RetroHours does not provide the game download or guarantee compatibility.
Where do I download Mega Man X: Viral Nightmare?
Check Cat Yard Games’ Game Jolt page for downloads and release updates. Availability can change. If no download is offered, this guide does not supply an alternative copy; if you already have a ZIP from the creator, you can try adding it to RetroHours.
Do I need to install the Windows game to try RetroHours?
You need the game ZIP, but you do not launch its Windows executable in RetroHours. Add the ZIP on the website; the browser player attempts to run the supported game files inside it.
Can I try it on a Mac, phone or tablet?
RetroHours uses browser capabilities rather than the Windows executable. Check the browser status on Home on the device you want to use. Phones and tablets have an on-screen pad, but passing the check does not establish this game’s compatibility or performance on that device.
Do I need an account or subscription?
Guest local play does not require an account. Free allows one local personal game; paid shelves have no game-count limit. Every tier requires admin approval of the exact files before play. Cloud (USD1.99/month) and Supporter (USD4.99/month) both include 100 MB for automatic cloud-save synchronization, current plus three prior completed versions per game, supported preference sync, local Spectator mode and early access to exact approved games before their Free release. Admin testing, assigned Playtest, Paid early access and Free release are manual stages. Prices include applicable taxes. Supporter adds voluntary financial support and one changeable vote in each administrator-created game-focus poll; public rankings guide development without promising support or delivery dates. Cloud includes 1 GB for game archives and Supporter includes 5 GB, separate from the 100 MB save allowance. During paid access, imported games and existing account and guest shelf games are backed up automatically. No games are included in a subscription. Games released to everyone remain playable after paid access ends, with a 30-day cloud export window. New Paid early-access launches require renewal or Free release; an already running game can stop and save normally. Installed files, local saves and exports remain available.
